Two Chinese nationals and a Nigerian police officer were shot dead on Friday evening in Uturu, Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State, following an ambush by unknown gunmen, the Abia State Police Command has confirmed.
The incident occurred as the victims were en route to a company site located at Agukwu-Amaya in the Ndundu community when the convoy came under heavy attack.
Those killed in the assault were identified as Mr. Quan and Mr. Cai, both Chinese expatriates, and Inspector Audu Saidu, one of the escort officers.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by the state police spokesperson, Maureen Chinaka, the assailants also made away with Inspector Saidu’s service rifle after the deadly assault.
“A distress report was received, prompting an immediate and coordinated response by the police, military, and other sister security agencies,” Chinaka said.
The joint security team successfully rescued three Chinese expatriates unhurt, while one sustained injuries during the operation. Another police officer, Inspector Uba Ahmed, was also rescued but suffered a gunshot wound to the leg.
Both the injured expatriate and Inspector Ahmed are currently receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia.
Chinaka added that tactical operatives led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) visited the crime scene on Saturday to further assess the situation and intensify investigations.
“In a collaborative action involving the police, military, and members of the local community, Inspector Ijeagwa Friday was also rescued unhurt,” she added.
While investigations continue, the state’s Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, has assured residents that every effort is being made to apprehend the culprits and bring them to justice.
He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or persons to the nearest police station or contact the command’s emergency lines: 08035415405, 08079210004, 08079210005, and 08079210006.
