In a surprising move, President Bola Tinubu has issued a directive to restructure the leadership of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).

The directive, which was made public on Tuesday night, involves the removal of Alhaji Zikrullah Kunle Hassan, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NAHCON.

According to the directive, Hassan has been asked to proceed on a three-month pre-retirement leave, in line with Public Service Rule (PSR) 120243.

This leave, effective from October 18, 2023, will lead to Hassan’s eventual retirement from service on January 17, 2023.

Simultaneously, President Tinubu has given his approval for the appointment of Alhaji Jalal Ahmad Arabi to take up the role of Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NAHCON.

Arabi’s term is set for four years in the initial phase, marking a significant change in the commission’s leadership.

The announcement of these changes came through a statement from Ajuri Ngelale, the special adviser to the President on Media and Publicity.

According to Ngelale, Alhaji Jalal Ahmad Arabi is set to assume office in an acting capacity on October 18, 2023.

Subsequently, he will take on the role in a substantive capacity for a fresh term of four years, beginning on January 17, 2023.

This unexpected shake-up of NAHCON’s leadership has left many speculating about the motivations behind the President’s decision.

The outgoing Chairman, Alhaji Zikrullah Kunle Hassan, had held his position for several years, and his removal from office comes as a surprise to both political observers and those within the commission.

Alhaji Jalal Ahmad Arabi, the newly appointed Chairman and CEO, is now faced with the task of steering NAHCON through a new era.

It remains to be seen how this change will impact the commission’s operations and its role in facilitating the Hajj pilgrimage for Nigerian Muslims.

As the public awaits further information on this transition, the government’s decision to overhaul the commission’s leadership is a significant development that will continue to draw attention in the coming days.
