The House of Representatives has mandated the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to enforce a nationwide block on all websites hosting obscene and pornographic content.

The resolution, passed on Tuesday, came following a motion sponsored by Dalhatu Tafoki, a lawmaker representing Katsina State.

Citing concerns over the detrimental impact of unrestricted access to pornographic materials, particularly among the youth, Tafoki stressed  the need for legislative action.

He pointed to the proactive measures taken by several countries across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East to ban pornography, emphasizing the role of such laws in upholding cultural and moral standards.

“Renowned psychologists and sociologists worldwide have issued strong warnings about the psychological, sociological, and mental consequences of consuming pornographic content,” Tafoki stated during the session.

He highlighted expert opinions on how pornography can contribute to societal ills such as adultery, prostitution, and addiction.

The motion garnered overwhelming support from lawmakers, who conducted a voice vote under the leadership of House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.

Their consensus centered on the imperative to shield Nigerian society from the adverse effects of explicit content and to preserve cultural norms.

In response to the resolution, the House directed the NCC to ensure immediate compliance by internet service providers (ISPs) and to impose strict penalties on ISPs found non-compliant with the directive.

This enforcement mechanism aims to enforce the prohibition effectively and mitigate potential challenges posed by the dissemination of pornographic materials online.
