The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress in the 2027 election, Atiku Abubakar, has claimed that he possesses evidence showing that President Bola Tinubu is 90 years old, saying he is prepared to present the evidence before a court if necessary.
Atiku, a former Vice-President, made the claim in an interview with the BBC published on Friday while defending his decision to seek the presidency again in 2027.
The allegation comes as political parties and their candidates begin positioning themselves for the 2027 presidential election, with Atiku emerging as the ADC candidate and Tinubu expected to seek re-election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.
Tinubu’s publicly stated date of birth is March 29, 1952, which would make him 74 years old in 2026.
However, Atiku challenged the stated age of the President, insisting that he had evidence to support his claim.
“You have a President who is 90 years old now and sick and I am healthy and strong. So why won’t I make myself available to serve my country?” Atiku said.
He added, “You went and voted for someone who is 90 years old. I have evidence that President Tinubu is 90 years old and I will present it in court.”
Atiku did not, in the material available from the interview, disclose the nature of the evidence he referred to or provide documentary proof of the allegation.
The former Vice-President also defended his repeated attempts to become Nigeria’s President, arguing that his persistence was informed by his opposition to military rule and previous circumstances that prevented him from contesting.
According to him, his decision to contest again is backed by his constitutional right to seek elective office as well as his experience, competence and commitment to Nigeria.
Atiku also blamed the worsening insecurity in the country on what he described as government irresponsibility, particularly in the areas of defence and policing.
He promised that, if elected President, his administration would prioritise security and tackle the problem within one year.
The 2027 contest is expected to feature a major battle among opposition forces and the ruling APC, with Atiku presenting the ADC as a platform for Nigerians seeking an alternative to the current administration.
The former Vice-President’s latest claim about Tinubu’s age is likely to generate further political controversy, particularly if he proceeds to make the alleged evidence public or introduces it in a legal proceeding.
This version keeps the allegation firmly attributed to Atiku, avoids presenting the disputed age as established fact, and gives the story a stronger 2027 political context.
