Legendary Nigerian musician, Evangelist Ebenezer Remilekun Aremu Olasupo Obey-Fabiyi, widely known as Commander Ebenezer Obey, has expressed deep gratitude to God for keeping him alive despite facing numerous health challenges throughout his life.
Speaking at his 83rd birthday celebration on Thursday, April 3, Obey recounted the numerous times he had been falsely reported dead, a painful reminder of his health battles.
“I can never forget the health challenges I faced at various points in my life, which led to numerous surgeries. I thank God for granting me victory over those trials. I have been rumoured dead more than 12 times, yet God’s verdict keeps me alive,” Obey stated during his thanksgiving service.
The event, which took place at Decross Gospel Mission, Lagos, was a beautiful testament to the faithfulness of God in his life.
The gathering was filled with dignitaries, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the King of Fuji, Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (K1 De Ultimate), as well as a host of friends, fans, and well-wishers from around the world.
With an emotional heart, Obey continued, “This is why I continue to live with a heart full of gratitude. Despite the health challenges I’ve endured — and the victories I have celebrated — I still travel far and near to play music at 83. This can only be attributed to God, and I return all the glory to Him.”
The music maestro dedicated his 83rd year and 68 years as a successful, world-acclaimed musician to celebrating God’s unwavering faithfulness in his life.
Obey, born in Idogo, Ogun State, on April 3, 1942, is celebrated for his exceptional career that spans over six decades.
From humble beginnings in Lagos in the mid-1950s, he went on to form his first band, The International Brothers, in 1964. Over the years, his innovative fusion of highlife and jùjú music, as well as his distinctive baritone voice, earned him global recognition.
Having retired into Nigerian gospel music ministry in the early 1990s, Obey’s music has always carried powerful Christian spiritual themes, resonating with audiences across generations.
His musical prowess, particularly his mastery of the guitar and Yoruba percussion, has made his music timeless, earning him a special place in the hearts of Nigerians and music lovers worldwide.
Obey’s milestone birthday celebration was a powerful reminder of the grace and strength that have carried him through a lifetime of musical success and personal challenges.
