Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has declared that he is unbothered by the ongoing political crisis in the state, stating that the worst that could happen to him is leaving office.
Fubara made the assertion on Monday during the inauguration of residential quarters for government house staff in Port Harcourt, the state capital.
The governor, who has been embroiled in a long-standing political rift with Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, said attempts to stabilize his administration continue to face setbacks.
“No matter how we have been fooled in this state, it has gotten to the point where the state has decided to take their destinies in their hands,” Fubara said.
While condemning violence, he assured the people that he would lead them when the time comes for decisive action.
“I’m not scared of anything; the worst that can happen is for me to leave the office. Am I leaving the earth? Will it stop me from existing? I’m not bothered about that,” he stated.
The political turmoil in Rivers State escalated further last Friday after the Supreme Court delivered rulings that seemingly bolstered the Wike-backed faction in the state.
The apex court affirmed a previous judgment barring the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Accountant-General of the Federation from releasing statutory monthly allocations to Rivers State.
Additionally, the court ordered the Martins Amaewhule-led faction of the state House of Assembly and other elected members to resume legislative activities.
In another setback for Fubara’s camp, the Supreme Court nullified the October 5, 2024, local government elections conducted in the state.
The crisis in Rivers State has lingered for over two years, marked by a bitter power struggle between Fubara and his predecessor, Wike.
The feud has split the state assembly into two factions, fueling political uncertainty.
Despite the challenges, Fubara has continued to receive support from his loyalists, insisting that he remains committed to doing the “ right thing” for the people of Rivers State
