International Breweries Plc, a subsidiary of AB InBev, hosted a stakeholders’ meeting and facility tour at its Gateway Plant in Ogun State as part of activities to commemorate the 2025 World Water Day.

The event, tagged “Cheers to Nature,” shows the company’s commitment to sustainable water management and conservation.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA), Hon. Abayomi Hunpe, who represented the state Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya  was part of the exercise, lauded the company’s efforts in meeting environmental standards.

He rated the company’s performance at 82%, acknowledging areas for minor adjustments while emphasizing the brewery’s consistent progress.

“The physical inspection shows that they are doing great things here and ensuring they meet standards, which is a significant achievement for the state and Nigeria as a whole,” Hunye stated.

“I want other companies to emulate what they are doing here because they are striving to meet regulatory standards.”

Highlighting the company’s water conservation efforts, the Plant Manager, Akintayo Oguntunde, emphasized the brewery’s alignment with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on water management.

“Water is key in our operation, not just for business but for life. Since we began operations in this environment, we have undertaken several corporate social responsibility projects, including providing clean water to the logbaara and Bajila communities,” Oguntunde said.

He further explained the company’s advanced water treatment process, ensuring that discharged water is safe for aquatic life and agricultural use.

“We have state-of-the-art facilities to treat water before and after production, ensuring that what we return to the environment supports sustainability,” he added.

On quality control and consumer safety, Oguntunde reassured stakeholders of the brewery’s collaboration with regulatory bodies, including the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

He urged consumers to report any suspicious products, emphasizing the company’s commitment to quality and security.

Speaking on the brewery’s water conservation strategy, the Director of Brewery Operations, Ms. Raidah Vaid, stressed the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling water.

She noted that 90% of the company’s daily processes depend on water, making sustainability a core operational goal.

“In terms of challenges, water availability remains a concern, but we have world-class treatment systems to ensure that our water is purified and safely returned to the environment.

“We also educate our staff and communities on reducing water footprints,” Vaid stated.

She further highlighted the company’s partnership with its Fly Fish brand to promote water conservation initiatives, reinforcing their dedication to environmental sustainability.

Earlier, there was an interactive session where stakeholders commended International Breweries for its proactive approach to water management, Corporate Social Responsibility, and community engagement.
