British-Nigerian heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua made a dramatic return to the ring on Saturday night, recovering from two first-round knockdowns to knock out Kristian Prenga in the second round of their heavyweight contest at the Jeddah Superdome in Saudi Arabia.
The victory was Joshua’s first since the December road accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway that claimed the lives of two of his close friends, who also served as his trainers.
Joshua, 36, endured a nightmare start after Prenga caught him with a powerful uppercut less than 20 seconds into the bout, sending the former two-time unified heavyweight world champion to the canvas.
The Nigerian-born boxer was knocked down again moments later and only narrowly beat the referee’s count to survive the opening round.
However, Joshua responded emphatically in the second round, taking control of the contest with a series of aggressive combinations before landing a crushing left hook that floored Prenga and sealed a stunning knockout victory.
Prenga failed to land a single punch in the decisive second round as Joshua completely turned the fight around.
The win improved Joshua’s professional record to 30 victories from 34 fights, with 27 of those wins coming by knockout.
It also marked the Sagamu-born fighter’s 10th career victory by second-round knockout.
For Prenga, the defeat was only the second of his professional career, having previously lost just once in 22 fights..
