The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress Local Government Chairmen Forum, Hon. Henry Fagbenro, has called for stronger grassroots participation in governance as Nigeria commemorates this year’s Democracy Day.
Fagbenro, in a statement on Thursday, said June 12 remains a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic history, underscoring the need to sustain the ideals of accountability, civic responsibility, and popular participation.
He described the June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely believed to have been won by the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, as a symbol of Nigerians’ collective struggle for justice and electoral integrity.
According to him, the annulment of the poll reshaped national consciousness and reinforced the importance of protecting the will of the people.
“June 12 continues to represent the voice of the people and the sacrifices made to sustain democracy as a system anchored on participation and accountability,” Fagbenro said.
Reflecting on his experience during the pro-democracy struggles, the APC chieftain noted that lessons from that era remain critical to strengthening democratic values and civic awareness across generations.
He stressed the need to deepen democratic practice at the grassroots level, insisting that meaningful governance can only be achieved when citizens actively participate in community development and national discourse.
Fagbenro also acknowledged ongoing efforts by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun to improve infrastructure, security, and socio-economic conditions.
He, however, emphasised that such efforts must translate into tangible improvements in the daily lives of Nigerians.
While noting that challenges persist, Fagbenro urged citizens to remain hopeful and actively engaged in governance processes, stressing that democracy thrives when the people play a central role.
He further called for stronger collaboration among citizens, community stakeholders, and government institutions, adding that democratic progress is only meaningful when it delivers real impact at the grassroots.
“The strength of our democracy lies in the participation of the people and our collective commitment to ensuring that its dividends are felt across all communities,” he added.
