The Ogun State Chapter of the Freelance and Independent Broadcasters Association of Nigeria (FIBAN) has called on Nigerians to deepen their commitment to democratic values, urging citizens to reject vote-buying and political inducement ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a Democracy Day message issued on Thursday and signed by its Chairman, Chief Olalekan Shoyinka (Ayinla Egba),the association said June 12 remains a defining symbol of the nation’s struggle for justice, popular mandate, and accountable governance, noting that the sacrifices of democracy heroes should continue to inspire national renewal.
Describing the day as more than a public holiday, Ogun FIBAN said it represents “the people’s determination to defend equity, justice and good governance,” stressing that democracy can only thrive where citizens remain informed, vigilant and actively engaged in the political process.
The association, which operates under the umbrella of the Freelance and Independent Broadcasters Association of Nigeria, said broadcasters occupy a critical space in strengthening democratic accountability as intermediaries between the government and the governed.
“We remain committed to being the voice of the voiceless, a platform for constructive engagement, and a defender of truth and public interest,” the group stated, adding that it would continue to uphold professionalism and responsibility in its civic role.
While acknowledging prevailing economic and social challenges in the country, the association cautioned against despair, insisting that Nigeria still possesses the human and material resources needed for national transformation.
It urged citizens to use the Democracy Day celebration as a moment of reflection, especially as the country approaches what it described as the last Democracy Day before the 2027 general elections.
According to the group, the period leading to the polls should be used to interrogate the quality of leadership the country desires, warning against electoral practices that undermine democratic progress.
“Nigerians must reject vote buying, political inducement and every form of money politics that weakens governance and development. The future of our country must not be exchanged for short-term gains,” it said.
The association also charged voters to prioritise competence, integrity, character, and proven capacity in their electoral choices, noting that sustainable development depends on responsible leadership selection and civic participation.
It added that building a stronger democracy requires collective effort, urging both leaders and citizens to uphold unity, accountability and peaceful political engagement.
“Together, we can strengthen our democracy and build the Nigeria of our dreams,” the statement added.
