The Kaduna State House of Assembly has intensified its scrutiny of the financial dealings during the tenure of former governor Nasir El-Rufai, as it seeks comprehensive details from the Ministry of Finance.
In a letter addressed to the ministry and signed by the assembly’s clerk, Sakinatu Idris, the assembly mandated the submission of all financial transaction records to a fact-finding committee tasked with probing the finances, loans, and contracts awarded during El-Rufai’s administration.
The letter outlined specific requirements, including total loans approved between May 2015 and May 2023, executive council minutes pertaining to these loans, payments to contractors, salary reports, and details on the sales of government properties.
The assembly set a deadline of April 25, 2024, for the submission of the requested documents.
This move comes on the heels of Governor Uba Sani’s revelation during a town hall meeting on May 29, 2023, where he highlighted the significant debt burden inherited from his predecessor.
Governor Sani lamented the state’s financial predicament, citing an inherited debt totaling $587 million, N85 billion, and 115 contractual liabilities from the previous administration, which has reportedly hampered the state’s ability to meet its financial obligations.
