Kano Assembly Moves to Amend Emirs Law Amid Calls For Sanusi’s Return

The Kano State House of Assembly is taking significant steps to amend the Kano State Emirs (Appointment and Deposition) Law, a move seen by many as a potential pathway for the restoration of the deposed Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, to his former position.

This development comes amidst growing public pressure and calls for the return of Sanusi, who was controversially dethroned in 2020.

The decision to amend the law was made during a plenary session on Tuesday, following a motion introduced by the Majority Leader, Hussien Dala, representing the Dala constituency.

Dala highlighted the necessity of revisiting the Emirs Law to address the challenges and issues that have emerged since the contentious 2019 amendment.

This previous amendment had divided the historic Kano Emirate into five separate entities: Kano, Rano, Karaye, Gaya, and Bichi, each led by a First Class Emir.

“The need to revisit the Emirs Law has become imperative to address the issues that have arisen from the 2019 amendment.

“We must ensure that our traditional institutions are governed by laws that reflect fairness and justice,” Dala stated during the session.

The proposal to amend the law comes in the wake of considerable public demand for Muhammad Sanusi II’s reinstatement.

Sanusi, a respected figure known for his integrity and vision, was removed from his position under the administration of former governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

Many residents believe his removal was unjust and have expressed strong support for his return.

Mallam Ibrahim Musa, a resident of Kano, voiced his hopes for Sanusi’s return, saying, “Sanusi is a man of integrity and vision.

His removal was a great loss to Kano, and bringing him back would be a step towards rectifying past wrongs.

“The amendment process is expected to involve extensive scrutiny and possibly public hearings to ensure that the views and concerns of all stakeholders are considered.

The Speaker of the House, Abdulaziz Garba Gafasa, underscored the importance of transparency and inclusiveness in the legislative process.

“We are committed to conducting a fair and open amendment process. All stakeholders will have the opportunity to contribute to the discussions,” he assured.

As this legislative process unfolds, the people of Kano eagerly anticipate the potential reshaping of their traditional leadership structure.

The amendment, if passed, could mark a significant shift in the governance of the emirates, potentially paving the way for a more harmonious and respected emirate system.

The move to amend the Emirs Law represents not only a response to public outcry but also a step towards ensuring that Kano’s traditional institutions are governed by principles of justice and fairness.

The outcome of this legislative effort could have lasting impacts on the state’s cultural and political landscape, especially concerning the revered position of the Emir of Kano.
