Kano Court Sentences Housewife To Death For Killing 8-Year-Old Girl

A Kano State High Court has sentenced a housewife, Fadila Adamu, to death by hanging for the murder of an eight-year-old girl, whom she kidnapped and threw into a well.

Justice Yusuf Muhammad-Ubale, delivering the judgment on Friday, ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt, leading to the defendant’s conviction for kidnapping and culpable homicide.

“I hereby sentence the defendant to death by hanging for kidnapping and throwing the victim into a well, which caused her death,” the judge declared.

According to the prosecution, led by Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, the crime occurred on July 14, 2019, at Tudun Wada Quarters, Kano.

The defendant reportedly abducted the minor around 4:45 p.m. and took her to her residence at Sabuwar Gandu Quarters.

Abba-Sorondinki told the court that Adamu deceived her sister, claiming that the child was the daughter of a friend who had traveled to Ghana and needed temporary shelter.

However, three days later, on July 17, 2019, at about 6:30 p.m., the defendant allegedly threw the child into a deep well in the Tukuntawa Quarters, leading to her death.

The prosecution presented seven witnesses and tendered the defendant’s confessional statements alongside a medical report confirming the minor’s death.

Despite denying the charges, the defendant, represented by defense counsel Zulaihat Tata, called four witnesses in an attempt to counter the prosecution’s claims. However, the court found the evidence against her overwhelming.

The crime was prosecuted under Sections 274(b) and 221(a) of the Penal Code, which criminalize kidnapping and culpable homicide, prescribing the death penalty for such offenses.
