In a significant move to cushion the impact of the fuel subsidy removal on January 1, 2024, the Kano State Government has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).
The MoU entails a N20,000 palliative for all state employees, addressing the economic challenges faced by civil servants in Kano State.
Comrade Mubarak Buba Yarima, Chairman of the TUC Kano chapter, affirmed the development, acknowledging the instrumental role played by the labour unions in negotiations with the government.
The agreement, prompted by a joint plea from NLC and TUC in October 2023, was a response to the prevailing economic difficulties experienced by workers.
Governor Yusuf promptly established a special committee in response to the plea, leading to the consensus that a N20,000 palliative would be initiated from December 2023, benefiting civil servants at both state and local government levels.
Yarima emphasized that this financial aid would persist until a comprehensive review of the minimum wage occurs within the next six months.
Furthermore, pensioners are set to receive a monthly palliative of N15,000 for three months, along with arrears to compensate for the missed December 2023 allowance.
Expressing gratitude to the Kano State Government, particularly Governor’s Special Adviser On Labour, Comrade Baffa Sani Gaya, and other committee members, Yarima highlighted the swift investigation and report submission that paved the way for this positive development.
He believes the palliative will significantly assist many workers and enhance their morale.
The move comes after the labour unions had issued a nationwide strike threat to underscore the challenges faced by workers post-President Bola Tinubu’s fuel subsidy removal.
The successful negotiations have averted the impending industrial action, marking the first increment for state and local government workers while the federal government had previously announced a salary increase for federal workers.
