Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on Thursday, met with National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.
The meeting, which took place at Ribadu’s office in Abuja, has garnered considerable attention due to its timing and context.
While the specifics of their discussion were not disclosed, Governor Yusuf described the meeting as a “fruitful engagement.”
This meeting occurs amidst a contentious battle for the Kano throne, a situation that has deeply divided the state’s political and traditional landscapes.
The controversy began when Governor Yusuf dethroned Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero as Emir of Kano, reinstating Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi to the position.
This move sparked significant unrest.
Bayero, who was not in the state at the time of his dethronement, returned to Kano, a decision that led Governor Yusuf to order his arrest for allegedly “creating tension” in the state.
Further complicating the matter, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero established his own court at the mini palace in Nassarawa, backed by military protection.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that this action suggested that he might have the support of the Federal Government, adding another layer of complexity to the already volatile situation.
The role of National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu in this affair became a focal point when Kano’s Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, accused Ribadu of supporting Bayero’s return to Kano after his dethronement.
Ribadu vehemently denied these allegations, threatening to sue Gwarzo and demanding a formal apology.
In response to the ultimatum, Deputy Governor Gwarzo issued an unreserved apology to Ribadu, admitting that he had been misled regarding the National Security Adviser’s involvement.
The meeting between Governor Yusuf and NSA Ribadu is seen as an attempt to address the security and political ramifications of the throne dispute.
It underscores the intricate balance of power and the importance of dialogue in resolving high-stakes conflicts within Nigeria’s traditional and political spheres.
