Kano Gov’s Aide  Reveals Five-Day Refuge In  Govt House To Evade Arrest

Sunusi Dawakin Tofa, the Director General of Media and Communication to Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, has disclosed how he hid in the Government House for five days to avoid arrest by the police.

Speaking at the PR Nigeria Young Communication Fellowship event in Kano on Saturday, Tofa claimed that the Inspector General of Police’s Monitoring Team had deployed at least 40 officers to the state to apprehend him.

Tofa explained that he sought refuge in the Government House because of its constitutional immunity, which prohibits arrests on the premises without the governor’s explicit authorization.

He added that he had obtained a court order restraining the police from detaining him, which gave him the confidence to attend the event despite the risks.

“For the last five days, I have been in the Government House and could not come out,” Tofa said.

“The nature of Kano politics is such that it sometimes feels like a federal versus state conflict. At some point, I have been at the center of such issues.

“There was a petition against me, and the IGP himself is handling it.

“He sent 40 officers to Kano with the sole aim of arresting me.

“However, I decided to attend this event for three reasons. First, I didn’t want to miss it, even if it meant getting arrested.

“Second, I have a court order, though it hasn’t been served to the police but is already public. Lastly, I came here prepared to resist arrest if necessary.”

Addressing attendees at the event, Tofa underscored the importance of mentorship in the field of communication, emphasizing that professional training and guidance from mentors can help individuals excel in media, journalism, and public relations.

“You don’t need to be a graduate of mass communication to succeed in this profession,” he said.

“For over 24 years, I have relied on mentors to guide my decisions. Sometimes, I even consult multiple mentors to weigh their opinions before choosing the best path forward.”
