Kano Lawyers  Drag  NBA To Court  Over Election Disqualification

Kano-based legal practitioners, Barrister Ahmad Sani Bawa, Jarman Tokarawa, and Barrister Gidado Aliyu Gidado have taken the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to court over its authority to disqualify lawyers from contesting elections based on anniversary standing.

The lawsuit, filed by Bawa and Gidado, seeks clarification on whether the NBA has the power to disallow lawyers who have paid their fees and have 10 years of post-call standing from participating in elections.

According to the application, the lawyers are acting on behalf of concerned members of the NBA Kano Branch affected by the guidelines of the 2024 NBA Kano Election.

The lawyers approached the Federal High Court in Kano with an Exparte Application, seeking an interim injunction to prevent the NBA from disqualifying eligible candidates pending a court decision.

However, Justice Simon Amobeda refused to grant the interim injunction but ordered the defendants to appear in court and show cause why the prayer by the applicants should not be granted.

The court set June 6th, 2024, as the date for the hearing, signaling a legal battle over the NBA’s authority in election matters.
