Katsina Governor Demands Legalization of AK-47 and RPGs For Nigerians To Fight Bandits

The Katsina State Governor, Dikko Umaru Radda, has called on the federal government to allow Nigerians to purchase and possess sophisticated weapons like AK-47 and RPGs for their protection against bandits.

The governor made this statement on Friday, October 20, during a media chat in Abuja, where he also stated that governors should not be held responsible for the security challenges in their states.

He argued that if bandits can illegally acquire such weapons in the market, law-abiding citizens should also be legally permitted to do so.

“We are moving towards that and seeking reforms within the federal government in that regard. If a bandit can go to the market and buy AK-47, RPGs, and all of those weapons, what about the people who want to protect themselves? They should equally be allowed to do so.

“These people are holding it illegally; we are trying to make it legal. Why can’t the government allow the people to possess these things and confront the challenges?”

However, he mentioned that his administration had established a ‘community watch corps’ to collaborate with the military and the police in addressing banditry in the state.

He added that he would not negotiate with bandits unless they surrender their arms and seek reintegration into society.
