A Catholic priest abducted by gunmen in Benue State, Rev. Fr. John Inalegwu Otache, has reportedly regained his freedom following a rescue operation involving security operatives and local vigilantes.
Otache, the Parish Priest of St. Margaret’s Parish, Ajegbe-Awume, in Ohimini Local Government Area of the state, was kidnapped on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, along the Otobi Amejo-Ajegbe Road while returning home from Otukpo.
His reported rescue has brought relief to members of the Catholic Diocese of Otukpo, his congregation and residents of neighbouring communities who had been concerned about his safety since his abduction.
The incident had triggered anxiety among the Catholic faithful and residents of the area, with prayers and appeals for his safe release following reports of his disappearance.
Sources cited in reports of his rescue said security operatives and local vigilantes participated in the operation that reportedly secured his freedom.
However, details surrounding the operation remain sketchy as of the time of filing this report.
The circumstances of his release, the location where he was rescued and his current health condition have yet to be officially confirmed.
The abduction comes amid persistent security concerns in parts of Benue State, where residents and communities have continued to face threats from kidnappers and other armed groups.
