In a significant move that highlights potential discord between the Lagos State House of Assembly and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Assembly has chosen to omit 17 out of the 39 commissioners and special advisers nominees initially presented for screening.
During the session held on Wednesday, 22 of the governor’s cabinet nominees received the Assembly’s confirmation, shedding light on the tension between the legislative body and Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration.
Notable figures among those left out of the approved list are Gbenga Omotoso, the former Commissioner for Information and Strategy; Prof. Akin Abayomi, the former Health Commissioner; and Sam Egube, the former Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, along with others.
Presiding over the session was Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, who underlined the thorough evaluation carried out by an ad-hoc committee led by Chief Whip of the House, Hon. Fatai Mojeed.
This comprehensive screening led to the confirmation of the selected nominees. Speaker Obasa encouraged those approved to recognize their duty to the state’s populace and not to individuals, emphasizing the Assembly’s commitment to the state’s welfare.
The confirmation process was conducted through a voice vote, with Dr. Obasa announcing each nominee’s name. However, 17 nominees failed to secure the Assembly’s endorsement, signaling a noteworthy divergence of opinion.
Among the approved individuals are Hon. Layode Ibrahim, Mr. Mobolaji Ogunlende, Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, Hon. Bola Olumegbon, and others.
These appointees will play crucial roles in the state’s governance.
In contrast, those not receiving the Assembly’s nod include Mrs. Folashade Adefisayo, Prof. Akin Abayomi, Mr. Yomi Oluyomi, and other high-profile names. The decision showcases a nuanced political landscape.
Before the proceedings, Hon. Mojeed Fatai briefed the Assembly on the results of the meticulous screening process, which ultimately determined the fate of these nominees.
