The management of the Lagos State General Hospital, Agege, has admitted issuing query letters to some of its nurses after they complained about a faulty air conditioning unit in their workplace.
The development, which sparked controversy, involved nurses working in the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit, who had reportedly endured difficult working conditions due to poor ventilation.
A source privy to the situation hinted that the nurses’ workspace was congested and lacked proper ventilation, making a functional air conditioning system essential.
“We have a problem with a conducive working environment at the hospital, particularly for the nurses attached to the Accident and Emergency Unit.
“Their room is very small to accommodate them, so there is a need for a functioning air conditioner (AC) to suppress the heat and congestion,” the source stated.
A query letter dated March 4, 2025, addressed to the affected nurses, accused them of refusing to attend to patients due to the non-functional AC in their changing room.
Part of the letter read:”You are to explain within 24 hours of the receipt of this query why disciplinary action should not be taken against you for the understated.”
“It was reported on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, that you refused to attend to patients due to complaints of a non-functional air conditioning system in your changing room.”
“The management understands the importance of a safe and healthy working environment and takes these concerns seriously. However, personnel also have a responsibility to ensure that patient care is not compromised.”

The nurses reportedly expressed appreciation to the hospital management for improving working conditions, citing the construction of a new Accident & Emergency unit and a cleaner, more welcoming environment.
“The work environment in our hospital has improved greatly, thanks to the management for the construction of a new Accident & Emergency unit, clean and welcoming ambiance.
“Management of the hospital is committed to ensuring a positive work environment for all staff and clients,” the statement added.
