Lagos  To Provide Palliatives To 500,000 Households Amid Economic Challenges – Sanwo-Olu

The Lagos State government has unveiled plans to distribute food items to 500,000 households across the state.

PLATFORM TIMES reports that the development was to  alleviate the economic strain caused by the removal of fuel subsidy and the devaluation of the naira,

The state Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu made this announcement on Wednesday during an update on the state’s intervention efforts aimed at mitigating the hardships faced by residents.

Speaking at Alausa in Ikeja, Sanwo-Olu emphasized the government’s commitment to providing support in various sectors including health, education, and food security.

Highlighting the scale of the initiative, the governor stated, “The big one that we are here to launch is our attempt to touch directly about 500,000 households.”

He revealed that foodstuffs have already been packaged and will be distributed through local governments, community development associations, religious bodies, and other stakeholders.

Sanwo-Olu also highlighted the success of the ‘Ounje Eko’ initiative, which offers discounted food items through makeshift markets established across the state.

“We created 59 makeshift markets outside of the regular markets… and made it Sunday-Sunday market,” he said, reaffirming the government’s commitment to selling food at a minimum discount of 25 percent.

However, the governor issued a stern warning against hoarding, emphasizing that the distributed items are meant for vulnerable individuals in need.

“Please, once they send these things to you, you’re not meant to hoard them or share them among your groups.

“The items are supposed to be for the vulnerable people who truly need them,” Sanwo-Olu cautioned.”

PLATFORM TIMES reports that the  initiative aims to provide immediate relief to families grappling with the economic fallout, demonstrating the state government’s proactive approach in addressing the challenges facing its residents.
