In a shocking revelation, the Lagos State Government discloses that a staggering 340 husbands have been beaten to a state of stupor by their wives within the past year, according to reports from the Lagos Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA).

Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, the Executive Secretary of DSVA, brought attention to this disturbing trend in the quarterly reports, noting a concerning increase in male victims reporting domestic violence over the last year.

She revealed that the agency is actively handling these cases to reach an amicable resolution, acknowledging the severity of the issue.

Simultaneously, the Lagos State Government responds to this crisis through the Joint Task Force on Implementation of the Executive Order on Safeguarding and Child Protection.

This task force, comprising top-level representatives from various government bodies, has initiated comprehensive monitoring and assessment across the Six Education Districts in the State.

Vivour-Adeniyi details the ongoing monitoring exercise that commenced on October 31, 2023, at Lagos City College, Sabo-Yaba.

Over 200 schools in Education Districts 4 and 5 have already been engaged, with on-the-spot assessments conducted in over 90 schools to evaluate compliance.

The goal is to confirm the practical implementation of the policy, identify strengths, and address areas for improvement.

Speaking at the engagement, Mr. Kamaldeen Akodu from the Office of Education Quality Assurance emphasizes the importance of schools implementing precautionary measures to ensure a safe learning environment.

Mr. Jubril Yakub from the Ministry of Youth and Social Development clarifies that the exercise is corrective, not punitive, and explains the reporting procedures to be adopted in schools.

Mrs. Ajoke Oshokoya, a representative of the Lagos State Safety Commission, stresses the significance of safety measures in schools.

She highlights the expectation for security personnel, safety equipment, safety training, and well-maintained facilities to be in place, ensuring the general well-being and security of students, staff, and visitors.

The report concludes with a reminder that the state government ratified the Executive Order (NO.E0/AA08 of 2016) in December 2016, establishing the Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy.

This policy is mandatory for all child-centered institutions, ensuring the rights of children in their care are safeguarded and protected.

Clear-cut protocols for handling reports and disclosures of abuse are defined, underscoring the government’s commitment to addressing and preventing domestic violence in all its forms.
