The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has confirmed 38 new cases of Lassa fever and nine deaths within a week, raising concerns over the spread of the viral disease.
The latest figures, released in the NCDC’s epidemiological report for week seven, show a decline from the 54 cases recorded the previous week.
However, the case fatality rate (CFR) has risen to 19.7%, compared to 17.8% recorded during the same period in 2024.
According to the report, the new cases were recorded in Bauchi, Ondo, Taraba, Edo, Plateau, Cross River, and Kogi states. Since the beginning of the year, at least one confirmed case has been reported in 12 states, affecting 66 local government areas.
The outbreak remains most severe in three states—Ondo, Edo, and Bauchi—which accounted for 73% of all confirmed cases. Ondo recorded the highest number of infections at 34%, followed by Edo (21%) and Bauchi (18%).
The NCDC report indicates that young adults between the ages of 21 and 30 are the most affected, though cases have been reported in individuals ranging from one to 94 years old.
The infection rate among males is slightly higher than females, with a male-to-female ratio of 1:0.8.
No new infections were recorded among healthcare workers during the week, and the number of suspected cases has dropped compared to the same period last year.
To contain the outbreak, the National Lassa Fever Multi-Partner, Multi-Sectoral Incident Management System (IMS) remains active, coordinating responses at all levels.
Lassa fever, a viral hemorrhagic disease, is primarily transmitted through contact with rodent excreta or bodily fluids from infected individuals.
The NCDC urged Nigerians to maintain proper hygiene, avoid exposure to rodents, and seek medical attention at the first sign of symptom.
