Libya ordeal: Omokri hails NFF, Super Eagles’ crisis management skills

Socio-political activist and former presidential aide, Reno Omokri has hailed the Super Eagles, Nigeria Football Federation and the Sports Ministry over their crisis management skills.

Omokri was reacting to the recent inhumane treatment players and officials of the Super Eagles went through in Libya when they went for their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, qualifier against the Mediterranean Knights.

The Super Eagles, traveling with about 22 players, technical crew, NFF officials, and some members of the House were unable to get to their destination on Sunday as their aircraft diverted to a smaller airport and kept them there for over 14 hours.

They were not given water, food or internet access at the Libyan airport.

“We are used to confronting and condemning Nigerian sports officials, and especially our sports minister and Nigeria Football Federation staff. However, on this Libya issue, they deserve commendation for their handling of the crisis,” Omokri wrote on Facebook.

“Their defence of our players was noble. Their endurance and restraint in the face of Libyan provocation was admirable. The way they went over and beyond to supply the Super Eagles squad in the face of the hostility by the Libyan authorities was most noteworthy. It was almost like the Berlin Airlift.

“There was strong cohesion between the players, the NFF, and the sports ministry. Their crisis management skills were top-notch. This challenge brought out the best in them and achieved the unintended benefit of strong team building.

“Whatever the Libyans may have hoped to achieve, I am sure they never thought that Nigeria would react as maturely as we did. And everybody involved deserves commendation. They really lived by the credo it takes teamwork to make the dream work. Well done, boys! Libya unknowingly did you a favour in fostering unity amongst yourselves.”

Meanwhile, the Confederation of African Football, CAF, has already confirmed that the match between Nigeria and Libya will not hold on Tuesday night.
