Judicial workers in Ogun state have initiated a five-day warning strike starting Monday, citing the non-payment of their 40 percent peculiar allowance.
The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) Ogun chapter closed down the state high court and magistrate court in Isabo, Abeokuta, leaving litigants and lawyers stranded as judges were unable to perform their duties.
JUSUN state chairman, Olarenwaju Ajiboye, explained that the strike was a result of the state government’s refusal to meet their demands, despite a 21-day ultimatum.
Ajiboye warned that if the government fails to address the issue by March 18, 2024, the union will escalate to an indefinite strike.
Ajiboye highlighted the disparity in payment, noting that while non-peculiar allowances were disbursed to regular civil servants in August 2023, judicial workers were neglected.
The union communicated the issue to the state government through letters to the head of service and the governor.
A meeting was held, but the reasons provided by the government were deemed untenable and unacceptable by the union, leading to the decision to proceed with the warning strike.
“The union held its congress, issuing a 21-day ultimatum to the state government.
“ In the absence of corrective action, a five-day warning strike was initiated, and if necessary measures are not taken by March 18, 2024, an indefinite strike will follow,” Ajiboye declared.
