A 30-year-old man, identified as Okpara Emmanuel, has been arrested by the Enugu State Police Command for allegedly killing his girlfriend following an argument over the source of a Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection.
The victim, identified only as Chinyere, was reportedly found dead in the suspect’s apartment at Olympic Layout, One-Day, Enugu.
The incident, according to the police, occurred on September 19, 2026, while the suspect was arrested two days later after neighbours reportedly detected an offensive odour emanating from his residence.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Tuesday at the command’s headquarters in GRA, Enugu.
Ndukwe said preliminary investigations indicated that Emmanuel allegedly struck the woman on the head with a pestle during an argument over allegations concerning who infected whom with HIV.
According to the police spokesperson, the suspect allegedly wrapped the woman’s remains in nylon and concealed them inside the toilet of his apartment.
The statement read in part, “On September 21, 2026, at about 6:30 pm, following information that he had allegedly murdered his girlfriend, preliminary investigation indicates that the suspect allegedly killed the victim on September 19, wrapped her remains in nylon and locked them inside the toilet of his apartment.
“The offensive odour of the decomposing body subsequently attracted neighbours, who forced the door open and apprehended him before the arrival of the police.”
The police said the suspect was rescued from an angry mob and subsequently re-arrested by operatives attached to the Awkunanaw Division.
Ndukwe added that the decomposing remains had been evacuated to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while efforts were ongoing to trace and inform the victim’s relatives.
The police spokesperson further stated that Emmanuel confessed during preliminary interrogation to striking the deceased with a pestle, allegedly resulting in her death.
However, the circumstances surrounding the death, including the exact cause, remain subject to further investigation and the outcome of the autopsy.
The Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to investigate the case thoroughly and ensure that the suspect is arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
Giwa also urged members of the public, particularly young women, to exercise caution when visiting people and to inform trusted relatives or friends about their movements.
Meanwhile, a video circulating on social media reportedly showed a man with blood stains around his nose surrounded by several people. Another portion of the footage purportedly showed a decomposing body lying on the floor inside a room in the apartment.
