A man, Bilyaminu Idris, has dragged his former fiancée’s father, Alhassan Dayyabu, before a Shariah Court in Magajin Gari, Kaduna State, over an outstanding ₦70,000 balance from the dowry he paid ahead of a marriage that was later cancelled.
Idris told the court on Monday that he had paid ₦220,000 as dowry in preparation for marrying Dayyabu’s daughter, but the proposed marriage did not take place.
According to him, Dayyabu subsequently refunded ₦150,000, leaving a balance of ₦70,000, which he allegedly promised to pay later.
The complainant said he had waited for five months, during which the defendant repeatedly promised to settle the outstanding amount but failed to do so.
“He kept making empty promises on paying the balance for five months but failed. I pray the court to compel him to pay me the money,” Idris told the court.
Responding to the complaint, Dayyabu acknowledged that he was expected to refund the remaining ₦70,000 to Idris.
He, however, pleaded with the court to grant him additional time to raise the money and fulfil his obligation.
After listening to both parties, the presiding judge, Malam Mu’awiyah Shehu, adjourned the case until November 26, directing that the defendant use the period to pay the outstanding amount to the complainant.
The case arose from the cancellation of the proposed marriage after Idris had paid the dowry, with the dispute centring on the recovery of the remaining refund.
