Members of the Edo State Market Women’s Association and Traders Welfare Union have demanded the sack of the Blacky Ogiamien-led leadership of the union.
DAILY POST reports that members of the association made the demand on Tuesday during a peaceful protest at the Palace of the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II.
They accused Blacky Ogiamen, the president of the Edo State Market Women’s Association of corruption.
The protesting market women armed with placards of various inscriptions alleged that the market unions are responsible for the increase in the price of foodstuffs across markets in the State.
The Spokesman for the Edo Traders Welfare Union, Comrade Lucky Orukpe, called for the immediate removal of Edo Market Women Association leaders over alleged high-handedness and failure to account for the finances of the association.
Orukpe also alleged that the funds include the N100 million donated to the association by Senator Adams Oshiomhole during his tenure as the governor of the state.
He alleged that the Blacky Ogiamen’s led government was yet to account for the money, which they had since found out to be true.
Also speaking, Mrs Patience Asuen, one of the market leaders, however, passed a vote of no confidence in the Blacky Ogiamen’s led administration.
Asuen sought the intervention of the Palace of the Oba of Benin on the matter.
Speaking on behalf of the Palace, Chief Isaac Oghafua Oyeoba, the Oyeoba of Benin, assured the protesters that the Oba of Benin, who is the life Patron of the union, would ensure that justice is served.
Oyeoba, who was joined by other Chiefs, cautioned the protesters against violence and advised them to conduct their activities peacefully.
