In a disturbing case heard at the Akwa Ibom State High Court in Ikot Ibritam, Oruk Anam Local Government Area, a 32-year-old man named Akaninyene Sunday Ekwere has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape of a 4-year-old girl.

Akaninyene Sunday Ekwere, an engine oil and electrical appliances seller, found guilty of defiling a minor in Ikot Ibritam.

Reports indicate that Ekwere, operating as a seller of engine oil, electrical appliances, and recharge cards, enticed the young victim into his shop where he committed the heinous act.

The child’s mother made a horrifying discovery when she noticed bruises around her daughter’s private parts during a bath, prompting her to report the incident to the police.

In a chilling confessional statement, Ekwere, an Ikot Ibritam resident and a neighbor of the victim, admitted to inviting the minor to his shop, where he applied vaseline oil to her private parts before committing the reprehensible act.

During the sentencing, Justice Nkereuwem Obot emphasized the danger Ekwere posed to society, declaring that he did not deserve to live among sane individuals. Consequently, Ekwere was found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Despite being known as “Doctor” in the community, the convicted man pleaded with the court for mercy, citing his marital status. However, the judge remained firm in delivering the sentence.

The case falls under the provisions of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Laws, 2020, which mandates life imprisonment for rape offenders, accompanied by the inclusion of the perpetrator’s name in the registrar of sex offenders in the state.
