The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has pledged robust support for the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) as part of efforts to deepen the fight against human trafficking in Nigeria.
The Press Officer,Vincent Adekoye, in a statement said Chairman and Chief Executive of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), made the commitment on Thursday while receiving the Director-General of NAPTIP, Binta Adamu Bello, OON, during a courtesy visit to the Agency’s headquarters in Abuja.
Describing NAPTIP as a “critical partner in combating human trafficking,” Marwa commended the leadership of Bello for her swift and decisive actions since assuming office.
He noted that her proactive approach has led to the arrest of several traffickers and the rescue of numerous victims across the country.
He said, “The appointment of the new NAPTIP Director-General is timely and strategic. She has hit the ground running.
Her resolve and operational interventions are commendable. Human trafficking is a grave crime, and victims suffer deeply. NAPTIP deserves all the support it can get.”
Marwa also proposed the development of a joint legal framework to define operational synergy, intelligence sharing, and collaborative actions between both agencies.
The statement further stated that Bello, in her remarks, emphasized the need for greater inter-agency cooperation, noting that the complexities of organized crime require a united front.
“The visit is part of our ongoing strategic engagements with sister agencies. Drug trafficking and human trafficking are increasingly interconnected, both globally and locally,” she said.
She explained that traffickers often exploit victims, particularly women and children, as drug couriers.
“Victims are also subjected to substance abuse as a form of control or coercion. Intelligence has shown significant overlap in the networks operating in both spheres.”
Adekoye in the statement stated that the highlight of the visit was the inauguration of a joint operational team to enhance collaboration and streamline efforts between the two agencies.
He added that senior officials and directors from both NDLEA and NAPTIP were present at the meeting.
