Former Katsina State Governor, Aminu Bello Masari, has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has presented better plans for Nigeria than any president he has encountered in nearly four decades of active participation in the country’s politics.
Masari made the assertion while speaking at a public function in Kaduna, where he urged Nigerians to look beyond criticisms of the Tinubu administration and assess its plans and policies.
The former governor, who also served as Speaker of the House of Representatives between 2003 and 2007, said his assessment was informed by his long experience in Nigerian politics.
“I can confidently say I have never seen a president with better plans to make Nigeria great than Bola Ahmed Tinubu. I have simply never seen anyone like him,” Masari said in a video published by HM Arewa, a Hausa-language media platform.
Masari served as Katsina State governor from 2015 to 2023 after his tenure as Speaker of the House of Representatives.
His comments came weeks after he was appointed Deputy Director-General, Parliamentary Mobilisation, of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council for Tinubu’s 2027 re-election campaign.
The former governor also rejected claims that the Tinubu administration had achieved little, arguing that previous administrations had faced similar criticisms during their first terms.
According to him, former President Olusegun Obasanjo was confronted with accusations of sectionalism and tribalism after his first four years in office, while similar narratives were also deployed against the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
“A short look at our history shows that in 1999, after Obasanjo finished his first four years, these same people came out with issues of sectionalism and tribalism,” he said.
“They did the exact same thing to Goodluck Jonathan, and that is exactly what they are doing now.”
Masari also criticised the use of religion and ethnicity in political debates, questioning attempts to associate particular religions exclusively with specific ethnic groups.
“What surprises me about our people when they talk about religion is this, is religion exclusive to the Hausa, the Yoruba, or even the Igbo?” he asked.
With the 2027 general elections approaching, Masari appealed to women preachers to use their influence within their families and communities to discourage messages capable of aggravating ethnic and religious tensions.
He urged them to engage their husbands, children and community members against rhetoric that could deepen divisions among Nigerians.
“Each and every one of you knows how to talk to her husband or children better than anyone else can,” he said.
Masari further alleged that some of the divisive narratives in the political space were being promoted by individuals pursuing personal interests.
He therefore called on Nigerians to reject attempts to exploit ethnic and religious sentiments for political mobilisation.
The former governor’s remarks come as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections intensify, with parties and political actors increasingly positioning themselves for the forthcoming electoral contests.
