The Wakilu Muslim of Yorubaland, Edo and Delta states, Sheikh Iskeel Awwal has warned Archbishop of the Abuja Catholic Archdiocese, John Onaiyekan not to set the country ablaze with his statement on May 29 inauguration of President-elect, Bola Tinubu.
The Islamic leader said the recent comment credited to Onaiyekan could destroy further the country fragile unity and religious harmony among the citizenry.
Addressing newsmen on Sunday in Abeokuta, Ogun state capital, Awwal said Muslim community in South West are not happy with the comment .
Onaiyekan, had last week Thursday said that swearing in Tinubu before the hearing of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal is concluded makes no sense .
Kicking against the comment by Onaiyekan, Wakeelu said “Tinubu’s emergence was designed by God and not human beings. Religious leaders should not set the country ablaze with their comments.
“The issue should not be turned to religious matters . We as religious leaders should lead by example .
“It is constitutional to swear in Tinubu on May 29, so that Nigeria can move forward .
“The Muslims in South West, Edo and Delta condemned the statement made by the Archbishop on Tunubu’s inauguration .
” This is not expected from the religious leader like Bishop Onaiyekan . As religious leaders, we should play the role of peace and not fanning the embers of disunity or religious war.
“We should contribute our quota to the peaceful co-existence of the people in Nigeria and not widen the gap between and among the religious adherents in the country.”
