A professional driver who chauffeured the late singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, to what would become his final performance has opened up on the events leading up to the young artiste’s sudden death, painting a picture of emotional turmoil, heated arguments, and a violent altercation.
The driver, who has been in the car-hire business for over two decades, said he picked up Mohbad from his Lekki residence alongside his wife, Wunmi, and their infant son.
According to him, the family appeared cheerful at first, with the singer doting over his child.
However, tension quickly set in when an argument erupted between Mohbad and his wife during the journey to the venue.
Speaking in an interview, the driver said the couple began quarrelling in Yoruba, with Wunmi angrily saying in pidgin, “You dey disgrace me and your pikin.”
She reportedly threatened not to attend the show, but eventually relented after pleas from those present.
Upon arrival at the event venue, the driver said the atmosphere became tense again after Mohbad’s performance, as a crowd of area boys mobbed the singer demanding money.
He noted that some soldiers had to intervene and escort Mohbad back into the vehicle to ensure his safety.
What followed, according to the driver, was a shocking altercation between Mohbad and one of his closest associates, Primeboy.
“He told Primeboy to get down and began punching him. Primeboy kept saying, ‘Mohbad I can’t fight you, I can’t touch you,’ but Mohbad didn’t stop.
It was when Primeboy dodged one blow that Mohbad’s hand struck the Prado’s glass, and he injured himself,” the driver recalled.
The injury reportedly left visible bloodstains on the car’s footmat and Wunmi’s clothes.
He said the conflict didn’t end there. On their way back home, Wunmi and Mohbad resumed quarreling. According to the driver, Wunmi hurled insults at the late singer, calling him names like “oloriburuku” and “oloshi”, and even brought up a past incident where she allegedly helped him borrow N200,000 for his mother.
“She insulted him and then grabbed him by the shirt collar so tightly that his necklace broke,” the driver stated, visibly emotional as he recounted the moment.
“If Wunmi was my wife, I would have beaten her blue-black for the nonsense she did in that car,” he added, condemning her actions.
Dismissing viral rumours that Mohbad attempted to throw his son into a river, the driver said, “That never happened. It’s not true.” He explained that upon their return home, he pleaded with both Mohbad and Wunmi to calm down, before choosing to sleep in his car outside their residence.
He however, got a shocker of his life the next morning when he received a call directing him to report to the nearest police station.
“I was shocked. How come?” he asked, fighting back tears as he recalled learning of the singer’s death.
