My Fresh Political Movement To End Godfatherism, Rescue Nigeria- El-Rufai

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has declared that his recent defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) marks the beginning of a major political revolution aimed at dismantling godfatherism and rescuing Nigeria from deepening existential threats.

Speaking with journalists in Kano on Monday, El-Rufai said he abandoned the APC to join forces with the Social Democratic Party (SDP), which he described as the only credible platform free from the internal dysfunction and power-brokering that have crippled Nigeria’s dominant parties.

According to him, the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have both been “destroyed by godfathers,” leaving Nigerians desperate for a genuine political alternative.

    > “We saw how godfatherism destroyed the PDP and is now wrecking the APC. Nigerians deserve a party built on fairness, internal democracy, and equal opportunity,” El-Rufai said.

He emphasized that the SDP, which has now become a rallying point for disillusioned politicians across party lines, offers a new beginning for Nigerians yearning for competent leadership and national rebirth.

El-Rufai, who was a founding member of the APC and played a key role in the party’s 2015 presidential victory, admitted that Nigeria’s political landscape had shifted dramatically, making it necessary to realign forces to tackle the country’s worsening crisis.

    > “Twelve years ago, we merged three parties to defeat an incumbent president. Today, the challenges are different, and so must our approach,” he explained.

The former governor also revealed that he was in Kano to consult with Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II and SDP leaders to map out a strong grassroots strategy, noting that Kano’s massive voter base is crucial for any serious political realignment.

Speaking on the raging debate over rotational presidency, El-Rufai maintained that Nigeria’s dire situation demands leaders chosen for competence and vision, not geographical origin.

    > “Our problems are too severe to care about where the next president comes from. We need someone with the ability to fix Nigeria’s fundamental issues,” he insisted.

El-Rufai further confirmed that coalition talks involving five major political blocs are ongoing to strengthen the SDP as a national opposition force, pushing back against suggestions that the party is merely a northern project.

    > “This is a movement for all Nigerians. We are building a platform where every citizen can find a voice without being strangled by political godfathers,” he said.

The former FCT Minister’s latest move is expected to jolt the political establishment as preparations heighten for the 2027 general elections.
