A media personality, Beady Nnanna, has accused a Lagos-based private hospital of medical negligence, alleging that her 44-year-old sister, Blessing Okolie, died after a doctor left a pair of scissors in her stomach during fibroid surgery.
Nnanna claimed that the incident occurred at a private facility in the Abule Egba area of Lagos State, where the deceased underwent a myomectomy on March 28, 2026.
Speaking withThe Punch and extracted by PLATFORM TIMES, the bereaved sister said the surgery initially appeared successful but complications soon emerged, which she alleged were ignored by the attending doctors.
According to her, “My sister started complaining of severe abdominal pain days after the surgery. Her stomach began to swell, and I kept asking the doctors to carry out a scan, but they refused and said nothing was wrong.”
She added that after persistent demands, a scan was eventually conducted at an external facility, which reportedly revealed the presence of a metallic object in the patient’s abdomen.
“The scan result showed that there was a metal in her stomach. That was when I realised something had gone terribly wrong,” she said.
Nnanna alleged that the hospital subsequently carried out a second surgery to remove the object, believed to be a pair of scissors, but said her sister’s condition deteriorated further afterward.
“She was already very weak before the second operation. She hadn’t eaten or taken water for days. Even after they said they removed the object, her condition did not improve,” she said.
The situation, she noted, worsened amid what she described as poor emergency response at the facility, including a power outage during a critical moment when oxygen was being administered.
“At a point, there was no fuel in the generator when she was on oxygen. I had to rush her out myself in the middle of the night without proper medical support,” she added.
Nnanna said her sister was later taken to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, where she died despite efforts to stabilise her.
She further disclosed that the family spent over N2m on surgery, drugs, and other medical expenses across both hospitals.
Blaming the hospital for negligence, she called on the authorities to investigate the matter and ensure accountability.
“That hospital needs to be shut down. I don’t want anyone else to go through what my sister suffered,” she said.
Nnanna confirmed that the case had been reported to the police, adding that the family was still awaiting updates.
However, the Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Abiodun Ojifinni, denied the allegations of negligence, insisting that the claims were premature and unverified.
He stated that the patient developed post-surgical complications, specifically sepsis, and was managed accordingly before being referred to LASUTH at the insistence of the family.
Ojifinni said, “There are a lot of half-truths circulating. We urge everyone to remain calm and wait for the outcome of the autopsy and coroner’s inquest, which will determine the actual cause of death.”
On the allegation that a surgical instrument was left inside the patient, the medical director declined to confirm or deny, stressing that it would be inappropriate to comment until the investigation is concluded.
“The matter is already under review. It is best to allow the process to run its course so that the truth can be established,” he added.
As of the time of filing this report, the autopsy result was still being awaited, while the deceased’s remains had yet to be buried.
