The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has taken decisive action in Kaduna, shutting down fifty outlets for selling edible oil under unsanitary conditions.

In a statement released on Saturday via its official handle, NAFDAC clarified that the closures were a result of the outlets dispensing edible oil in unhygienic environments.

This action comes as part of NAFDAC’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness among dealers, focusing on Registration Procedure and Food Management.

Explaining the rationale behind the crackdown, NAFDAC emphasized the importance of preventing potential health risks associated with contaminated edible oil.

Josephine Dayilim, the director of NAFDAC’s North-West zonal office, cautioned consumers against using oil processed in unsanitary conditions, highlighting the serious health risks such as food poisoning, gastroenteritis, and even cancer due to inadequate processing and the use of corrosive equipment.

Mrs. Dayilim further advised consumers to prioritise the use of food-grade materials and to ensure the maintenance of hygienic production environments to guarantee consumer safety.

In addition to urging manufacturers to consistently comply with regulations, NAFDAC reiterated its unwavering commitment to safeguarding public health and emphasized its readiness to impose sanctions on violators.
