The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has threatened to impose sanctions on manufacturers allegedly flouting the nationwide ban on the production of alcoholic drinks in sachets and small containers.
The Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, said on Thursday that despite repeated warnings and ample time given to manufacturers to comply with the directive, some companies had continued to produce the prohibited products in violation of regulatory provisions.
Adeyeye disclosed this during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, monitored by PLATFORM TIMES.
She described the continued production of sachet alcoholic beverages by some manufacturers as a blatant disregard for the agency’s regulations, warning that NAFDAC was weighing appropriate consequences for the offending companies and individuals.
“We are considering consequences for those who continue to violate the ban despite the several warnings and the grace period granted to them,” she said.
The NAFDAC boss reiterated the agency’s determination to enforce the ban, stressing that regulatory compliance was non-negotiable.
Her warning comes days after the agency intensified its nationwide enforcement exercise against the production and distribution of alcoholic drinks packaged in sachets and small polyethylene terephthalate bottles.
Earlier this week, NAFDAC sealed three manufacturing companies in Ogun State over the alleged production of banned sachet alcoholic drinks as part of the ongoing crackdown.
The enforcement followed the expiration of the compliance period granted to manufacturers after the agency announced a phased withdrawal of sachet alcohol from the Nigerian market.
NAFDAC has consistently maintained that the ban is aimed at protecting public health, particularly among young people, by reducing easy access to cheap alcoholic beverages while promoting responsible alcohol consumption.
The agency has vowed to sustain enforcement operations across the country and ensure that all manufacturers comply with the directive.
