In  the wake of the Nigeria COVID-19 Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus (NG-CARES) initiative’s second Independent Assessment, the Federal Government has disbursed a total of N135.4 billion to states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Dr. Abdulkarim Obaje, National Coordinator of the NG-CARES Programme, announced the fund distribution, praising Nasarawa, Cross River, and Zamfara as top performers.

Nasarawa secured N13.6 billion, Cross River N10.9 billion, and Zamfara N10.2 billion in the assessment.

Obaje emphasized that these allocations are tied to states’ results in aiding the underprivileged under the NG-CARES initiative.

He commended the administration of President Bola Tinubu for its commitment to addressing multi-dimensional poverty in the country through substantial funding.

Senator Atiku Bagudu, the Minister for Budget and Economic Planning, received accolades for coordinating the NG-CARES programme at the federal level, fostering collaboration with states and the FCT.

The national coordinator also acknowledged the crucial support from state governors, the FCT minister, and the World Bank.

Launched by former Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo in January 2022, the NG-CARES initiative, backed by a $750 million World Bank budget, aims to provide emergency relief to vulnerable Nigerians, particularly supporting smallholder farmers and MSMEs impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The World Bank loan spans two years (2021-2023), with each state receiving $20 million and the FCT getting $15 million, along with an additional $15 million for the Federal Cares Support Unit.
