In a dramatic interception at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, Nigeria, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) apprehended a Delhi-bound passenger, Freeman Charles Ogbonna, who was attempting to smuggle 80 wraps of cocaine inside his body.
The shocking revelation came to light during a routine screening at terminal 2 of MMIA.
According to Femi Babafemi, the director of Media & Advocacy at NDLEA Headquarters Abuja, Ogbonna, initially identified with a Liberian passport under the name Carr Bismark, aroused suspicion during a body scan which detected the presence of illicit drugs in his system.
Under the watchful eyes of NDLEA operatives, Ogbonna reportedly began to show signs of discomfort before eventually vomiting and excreting the tightly wrapped packages of cocaine.
Despite the grave risk to his health, Ogbonna confessed that he had been recruited by a relative to traffic the drugs, with the promise of a cash reward upon successful delivery in India.
The arrest of Ogbonna was just one of several successful operations carried out by NDLEA officers across different locations in Nigeria.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that in another instance, Imran Taofeek Olalekan was intercepted at the Lagos airport while attempting to travel to Oman with concealed drugs.
Additionally, at the Tincan seaport, a significant seizure of synthetic cannabis was made during a joint examination with Customs Service.
Meanwhile, NDLEA operatives re-arrested Gidado Sani in Kano, who had jumped bail on drug offence charges, and apprehended Wasiu Jimoh in Ogun state during a raid operation.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that several other suspects were also nabbed in different parts of the country for their involvement in drug-related activities.
Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), has commended the efforts of the various commands and urged them to intensify their offensive actions against drug cartels.
