The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, on Saturday, destroyed a staggering 1.6 million kilogrammes of seized illicit drugs in Ogun State as part of renewed efforts to clamp down on drug trafficking and abuse across the country.
The destruction exercise, held in Ipara, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
It was hosted by the Ogun State Commander of the NDLEA, Tijana Rabe, who described the development as a significant milestone in the command’s operations.
The massive consignment of drugs destroyed comprised substances confiscated from multiple NDLEA formations under Zones 9 and 11, including the Lagos Strategic Command, Ogun, Oyo, Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos Seaports, Idiroko, and Seme Border Commands.
“This is a collective success,” Rabe said. “We couldn’t have achieved this without the unwavering support of sister security agencies like the Nigerian Police, NSCDC, Nigerian Army, Immigration, and Amotekun Corps.”
She also lauded the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, for his consistent support of the agency’s ‘War Against Drug Abuse’ campaign, adding that state backing has strengthened NDLEA’s ability to unmask and prosecute drug barons operating within the region.
Representing the Chairman/Chief Executive of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), the Deputy Commander-General of Narcotics, Ibrahim Abdul, said the event reflected the agency’s deep commitment to eradicating drug abuse and trafficking in the country.
“This exercise speaks to the enormity of the drug problem Nigeria is facing,” Marwa said. “To the traffickers, the times have changed. Under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, we are resolute in our determination to eliminate this menace.”
Among the substances destroyed were 1.4 million kilogrammes of cannabis, 123kg of cocaine, 46.8kg of heroin, 148,000kg of codeine syrup, 111kg of methamphetamine, 1.544kg of skuchies, and several other synthetic and illicit substances.
Marwa noted that Lagos and Ogun remain hotspots for drug trafficking due to their proximity to international airports, seaports, and land borders, adding that the NDLEA would continue to go after traffickers with full force.
In a broader context, Marwa disclosed that the agency has successfully secured convictions of 10,572 drug offenders in the last four years, a figure he said demonstrates the NDLEA’s resolve and capacity to dismantle the country’s drug networks.
