Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intercepted a cache of 942 explosive devices along the Kaduna-Zaria expressway, en route to Zamfara State.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by the agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the explosives were recovered on Saturday, May 3, during a routine stop-and-search operation on a commercial vehicle traveling from Nasarawa State to Zamfara.
A 30-year-old suspect identified as Nura Sani Muhammad, also known as Nura Hariji, was apprehended in connection with the consignment.
The dangerous materials were reportedly concealed in a sack, raising suspicions about the intended destination and purpose of the explosives amid ongoing security concerns in Zamfara.
NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd), has directed that the suspect and the seized items be handed over to the appropriate security agency for further investigation and action.
In a related operation, the agency announced the arrest of five members of a drug syndicate on Wednesday, April 30, at Dangoro Market in Kano.
The group, led by one Aminu Musa, alias Kadagi, was found in possession of 50 blocks of compressed cannabis sativa weighing 21.6 kilograms.
Additionally, NDLEA officers in Edo State, acting on intelligence, intercepted a white Toyota bus on Thursday, May 1, in Uromi, Esan North-East LGA.
The vehicle, traveling from Onitsha in Anambra State to Auchi, was found with a large consignment of assorted opioids including 314,020 pills of tramadol, rophynol, diazepam, and exol-5; 638 bottles of codeine syrup; and 200 ampoules of pentazocine injection. One suspect was arrested in connection with the shipment.
The agency reiterated its commitment to intensifying its operations against illicit drug trafficking and the movement of dangerous substances across the country, especially in regions plagued by insecurity.
