Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have arrested a 20-year-old man, Saidu Adamu, after allegedly recovering 785,000 capsules of Pregabalin weighing 669.425kg during a raid in Sabon Gari, Kano State.
The massive consignment was intercepted in the Sabon Gari area of the Kano metropolis as part of the agency’s ongoing operations against the trafficking and distribution of illicit and controlled substances.
The NDLEA disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday by its Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.
The agency said Adamu was taken into custody following the raid, while the seized Pregabalin was recovered from the operation.
The latest seizure comes amid intensified efforts by the NDLEA to disrupt drug trafficking networks and prevent the movement of controlled substances across the country.
In a related operation in Kano, NDLEA operatives conducting a stop-and-search operation along the Zaria-Kano-Hadejia road intercepted 1,700 tablets of diazepam allegedly concealed inside loaves of bread.
The agency said a 28-year-old man, Habibu Sabitu, was arrested in connection with the consignment.
The crackdown extended beyond Kano, with NDLEA operatives in Plateau State arresting a 51-year-old man, identified as Chinedu Uzor, at Katako Market, Jos.
Uzor was allegedly found in possession of 157,100 capsules of tramadol, according to the agency.
Commenting on the seizures and arrests, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), commended the operatives for what he described as their successes in the ongoing drug-control operations.
Marwa urged officers of the agency to sustain the pressure on drug trafficking networks and block the channels through which illicit drugs enter and circulate within the country.
He specifically directed the operatives to continue shutting down the pipelines exploited by drug cartels across airports, seaports, land borders and the hinterland, including areas where cannabis is cultivated.
The NDLEA has in recent years intensified interdiction operations, combining raids, road searches and intelligence-led arrests in its campaign against drug trafficking and abuse.
The suspects remain in the custody of the agency as investigations into the seizures continue, according to the NDLEA.
