President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ibrahim Gusau, has resigned from office amid growing concerns over the country’s recent failures in international football.
Gusau announced his resignation on Thursday at a press conference in Abuja, bringing his tenure as the head of the country’s football governing body to an abrupt end.
His resignation comes at a difficult period for Nigerian football, with the Nigeria Football Federation facing mounting criticism over the performances and fortunes of the country’s national teams.
The development followed the failure of the Super Eagles to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Super Falcons’ inability to secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, setbacks that have intensified scrutiny of the federation’s leadership.
The twin failures have generated widespread concern among football stakeholders and supporters, with questions being raised about the administration of Nigerian football and the strategies deployed to keep the national teams competitive.
Gusau’s departure is therefore expected to trigger fresh discussions within the football community over the leadership and future direction of the NFF.
The NFF president had been at the centre of efforts to administer Nigerian football and oversee the country’s national teams.
However, the recent setbacks suffered by both the men’s and women’s senior national teams have placed the federation under increasing pressure.
