The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has assured the public of the safety and security of the Nigerian airspace.
This declaration comes in response to recent reports from certain online publications claiming that the airspace is insecure due to a lack of radar coverage.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Acting Director-General of the NCAA, Captain Chris Najomo, emphasized the authority’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards of air safety.
He reaffirmed the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency’s (NAMA) position on the comprehensive radar coverage of the nation.
Addressing concerns raised by the publications, Captain Najomo stated, “In furtherance to this, the NCAA investigated two recent cases of violations of the prohibited flight zones (DNP4) in Abuja and established that both violations comprised controlled flights in controlled airspace, but strayed into restricted airspace as a result of adverse weather.”
The NCAA confirmed that NAMA possesses complete radar footage of these incidents, including full details of the aircraft and operators involved.
This evidence, according to the NCAA, underscores the effectiveness of the primary and secondary surveillance radars operational in Abuja.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that similar radar installations are also in place in Kano, Lagos, and Port Harcourt, ensuring extensive coverage and monitoring capabilities.
It added that to further bolster Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure, the NCAA announced the addition of five Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radar (MSSR) stations.
The NCAA said the new installations will be located in Obubra, Ilorin, Talata Mafara, Maiduguri, and Numan.
It stated that these stations are set to augment the existing four radar centers, thereby achieving total radar coverage across the country.
