A Nigerian Army officer, identified as Lieutenant Isma’il Abdullahi Chafe of the Nigerian Army, has reportedly been killed in a suspected terrorist ambush in Sokoto State, just weeks to his scheduled wedding.
The late officer, who was attached to the 248 Recce Battalion, Illela Barracks, was said to have been among soldiers ambushed on Saturday, May 16, 2026, by armed assailants believed to be members of the Lakurawa terror network while on active operational duty.
Sources and multiple posts circulating on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) claimed that Lt. Chafe died during the deadly encounter, although official military confirmation had yet to be released as of press time.
The attack reportedly occurred in the Illela axis of Sokoto State, a border community known for recurring security challenges linked to cross-border armed groups.
Eyewitness accounts and tributes shared online described the officer as a disciplined and promising young soldier who was preparing for his wedding slated for June 13, 2026, before the fatal incident.
One social media user, who identified the deceased as a close relative, lamented that efforts to obtain official clarification from military authorities had been unsuccessful, alleging a lack of public communication on the incident.
Another tribute described Lt. Chafe as a “brother and friend” who “paid the ultimate price in an ambush,” while praying for his forgiveness and eternal rest.
Emotional reactions also poured in from colleagues and acquaintances on Instagram, where the deceased officer was described as “humble, gentle, and highly respected” among peers. A former academy colleague further noted that he was “kind-hearted and always looked out for others.”
The reported killing has sparked renewed concern over the worsening security situation in parts of northern Nigeria, particularly in border communities where armed groups continue to operate with relative freedom.
