A Nigerian national, Okenyehike Kelvin Obianke, has been arraigned before a Malaysian magistrates’ court for allegedly biting off a police officer’s ear during an altercation in Kuala Lumpur.
Obianke, 38, pleaded not guilty to a charge of causing grievous harm to Corporal Danielrul Azraq Ahmad Khair, 36, attached to the mobile patrol unit of the Sentul district police headquarters.
The incident reportedly occurred around 10:10am on April 25, 2025, in front of a private clinic at Metro Prima, Kepong.
Appearing before Magistrate S. Mageswary on Wednesday, April 30, Obianke, a private college student who was unrepresented in court, claimed the act was unintentional.
“I am not guilty,” he said after the charge was read.
He is being tried under Section 325 of the Malaysian Penal Code, which prescribes up to seven years’ imprisonment and a possible fine upon conviction.
The court denied him bail and fixed June 10 for the appointment of a legal representative and the submission of case documents.
In a separate court appearance before Magistrate Atiqah Mohamed@Mohamad Saim, Obianke also pleaded not guilty to two other charges: entering Malaysia without valid travel documents and consuming nimetazepam, a banned psychotropic substance.
The immigration charge, under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act, attracts a penalty of up to five years in prison, a RM10,000 fine, or both, as well as a mandatory minimum of six strokes of the cane if convicted.
The drug charge, under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act, carries a penalty of up to RM5,000 or a two-year prison term.
Mention in the second case has been scheduled for July 23.
Kuala Lumpur Police Chief, Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa, confirmed that the corporal lost part of his left ear during the arrest, following a distress call made by the clinic’s staff due to Obianke’s alleged unruly behaviour.
According to Sentul District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Sukarno Mohd Zahari, attempts to reattach the severed part of the ear have been postponed due to infection risks.
Medical staff at Kuala Lumpur Hospital are expected to reassess the officer’s condition before proceeding with reconstructive surgery.
