Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North in the Senate, has voiced his strong defense of former military president Ibrahim Babangida, describing it as unfair treatment towards Babangida by Nigerians.

He spoke on the he release of Babangida’s memoir, A Journey in Service: An Autobiography of Ibrahim Babangida.

The 420-page autobiography has stirred national debate, particularly due to Babangida’s admission that MKO Abiola indeed won the annulled 1993 presidential election.

In an exclusive interview on Television’s programme, Senator Kalu said “I think Nigerians are very unfair to Babangida because he came out on his own,” stated the former Abia State governor, emphasizing Babangida’s courage in addressing sensitive historical events that have long been shrouded in controversy.

Kalu highlighted the significance of Babangida’s revelations, particularly regarding the misconception surrounding the 1966 coup.

“Babangida disclosed that the 1966 coup was not an Igbo coup, debunking a misconception that has unfairly tarnished the Igbo people for decades,” Kalu asserted, urging for a broader understanding of historical truths.

Calling for a sequel to Babangida’s memoir, Kalu stressed the importance of a comprehensive account that includes the roles played by other military figures during the fallout of the June 12, 1993 election.

“There should be a second part of the book,” Kalu urged, “to fully elucidate the challenges and decisions faced by Babangida and other key figures during that tumultuous period.”

Reflecting on the dangers faced by Babangida at the time of his departure from power, Kalu stressed the need for additional voices from within the military to contribute to a complete narrative.

“More military people that were there should talk about this,” Kalu insisted, highlighting the complexities that surrounded Babangida’s tenure and subsequent decisions.
