The detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has publicly apologised to the Federal High Court, Justice Binta Nyako, and lead prosecutor, Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, over his misconduct during the previous proceedings in his ongoing terrorism trial.

Kanu, in an emotional plea delivered on his behalf by his lead counsel and former Attorney General of the Federation, Kanu Agabi, SAN, begged for forgiveness and vowed to maintain decorum throughout the remainder of his trial.

In the prepared statement, Kanu acknowledged that his outburst in court was inappropriate and expressed deep regret for attacking the judge, the prosecution, and even his own legal team.

“In expressing his anger, he attacked the Federal High Court, Justice Binta Nyako, the prosecutor, and even his own lawyers,” Agabi stated.

“I hereby apologise to Justice Binta Nyako. She did not deserve the unjust attack. I apologise to Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, a man who deserves the highest respect but was castigated without reservations.”

Agabi further emphasised that while Kanu had reasons to feel aggrieved, he should have exercised restraint.

“I appeal for forgiveness. Kanu is a good man, but none of us is perfect. He is defending the cause of the Igbo people, who are resilient, fearless, and use their God-given talents to give a good account of themselves.

However, in resolving our differences, let us employ peace and not violence,” Agabi pleaded.

Reacting to the plea, Awomolo, SAN, stated that he had accepted Kanu’s apology, clarifying that he was not a persecutor but a prosecutor, and that his role was to ensure a fair and speedy resolution of the case.

Kanu is facing terrorism-related charges brought against him by the Federal Government. His trial has drawn significant national and international attention due to its political and legal implications.
