No Journalist Hounded Or incarcerated Under Tinubu’s Administration – Minister

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has affirmed  that not a single journalist has been hounded or incarcerated under the Bola Tinubu’s Administration.

The Minister said this at a press briefing organized to commemorate World Press Freedom Day.

The event, held in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Environment and Ecological Management and UNESCO, highlighted the crucial role of responsible journalism in Nigeria and the world.

Idris emphasized the significant strides made in fostering a free media environment, contrasting it with past eras where journalists had to leave the country to report.

He underscored the importance of honesty and transparency in reporting, asserting that while the Nigerian press is largely free, upholding these principles will further consolidate press freedom.

Acknowledging President Tinubu’s recognition of the media’s role in enlightening and informing the public, Idris stressed the need for credible and timely information to promote transparency and accountability.

He emphasized the government’s commitment to providing unfettered access to journalists, enabling the Nigerian media to flourish.

However, the Minister cautioned against irresponsible journalism, highlighting the detrimental effects of spreading falsehoods and misinformation.

He urged the media to present a positive and accurate portrayal of Nigeria to attract foreign investment.

Addressing this year’s World Press Freedom Day theme, “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the face of Environmental Crisis,” Idris emphasized the urgent need for action on environmental issues.

He underscored the role of press freedom in addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, stressing the importance of journalists dedicated to reporting the truth.

The event, attended by key dignitaries including the Minister of State for Environment and Ecological Management and the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting press freedom and environmental sustainability.
